Automated School Zone Speed Program Report

National studies show that a significant number of school-aged children are killed or injured while walking to or from school. Over 38% of student transportation deaths are pedestrians and bicyclists. It is important that a community provides a safe environment for pupils as they commute back and forth to school. Automated traffic enforcement is a force-multiplier for police to monitor and slow traffic in and around school zones.

We, at Sensys Gatso, are committed to making the community safer for our school aged students. Our programs provide amazing results of reducing speed and dangerous driving along school corridors.

Overview

School zones faced frequent speeding violations, endangering students and creating unsafe conditions during critical hours.

Eight advanced camera systems were deployed across five school zones, combining enforcement with a community awareness campaign.

Violations dropped by 81.3%, average speeds reduced by 3%, and police resources were freed up for other community needs.

School Year 2023-2024 Results

A Midwestern city’s automated speed enforcement program began in September 2023 to address traffic safety in the school zone corridors. Eight camera systems were installed to enforce speed in 5 school zones across the city.

There was a two-week warning period as part of a community awareness campaign. Registered owners of captured violations received a warning notice during that period. Actual enforcement began in mid-September and concluded with the last day of school in June 2024. During the first year of the program there were 2,765 warnings and 11,140 citations issued.

Comparing the average violation rate during the last three months of the school year, the city realized an 81.3% (3.48% v .65%) reduction as compared to the initial warning period. Additionally, there was a 66% reduction in violations comparing the initial month of the program to the average number issued over the last three full months of the school year.

Using the same period, the average speed of traffic in the monitored school zone during the enforcement period reduced nearly 3%.

Sensys Gatso is very pleased that our systems have had such a profound impact on safety in the school zones. Our proven technology provides a force multiplier in the city and allows police resources to be redirected to other issues and concerns in the community.
