Keeping Kids Safe in School Zones
In 2015, 284 teens ages 12-19 were killed while walking; that’s more than 5
pedestrian deaths every week. There has actually been a 13 percent increase
in the pedestrian death rate for 12-19 year olds, presenting a renewed challenge
for protecting kids on the move.

Vehicles traveling 10 mph or more over the speed limit decreased by 70% within the first six to eight months of the cameras’ usage
Within the U.S., Montgomery County, Maryland’s program has shown substantial safety improvements.
Started in 2007 in areas with speed limits of 35 mph or less, IIHS’s analysis in Montgomery County showed that the proportion of vehicles traveling 10 mph or more over the speed limit decreased by 70% within the first six to eight months of the cameras’ usage. And even seven years later, those observed decreases in speeds remained. Similar reductions in speed and crashes have been observed in other cities, including Washington, D.C., and New York City, where speeding at camera locations dropped by 72%.
